What is Bike Fit Adviser?
Not too many years ago bike fitting was something of a non-entity in the bike world. I began doing bike fittings shortly after graduating from PT school in 1997, and at that time there was not much research on the subject and the available fitting methods had little or no scientific basis behind them.It probably didn't help that a telescoping armed goniometer was state of the art measurement equipment for the few bike fitters out there. In fact, bike fitters relied more on "guru" status than certifications since many of them didn't use any measuring equipment at all and instead would eye-ball their fittings.A lot has changed, especially with the explosion in technology and even more so in the number of people who identify as bike fitters, creating an even greater need for clarity.
The Bike Fit Adviser was born out of this need.
Bike fitting is mainly about assessment -- of the rider and how they move when on their bike. The more experience a bike fitter has in assessing movement, the better the decision-making process will be and the better the resulting bike fit. This website will focus on bike fitters of all sorts:
- shop employees looking to be exposed to more assessment scenarios and refine their skills
- PTs, MDs, and other clinicians looking to serve their athletic clientele better, and perhaps enhance their cash-pay business
- athletes who want to keep improving their own personal bike fit mechanics
A deeper understanding of human movement and greater exposure to possibe bike fit scenarios is the best way to improve your skills as a bike fitter. At Bike Fit Adviser I aim to provide opportunities to accomplish both these goals.
